Why Am I Applying to Fort Lewis College?
The sky gray, but still filled with light, dropping snowflakes softly onto the ground. The pine trees are motionless. It was Christmas Eve and I was standing in the snow covered gravel with my cousin John. In the distance we can see our sisters disappear down the hill. We wait a few minutes after they are out of sight and begin our tracking expedition. Following their footsteps left in the snow we journey down the hill and through the forest, eventually, we see our sisters in a white field and catch up to them and join the conversation. All of the Schultheis kids standing in a white field just enjoying eachothers company. My family has been here for about 20 years. This is where I was raised, this is my home. I love Durango, the mountains, the people, and the overall atmosphere. I have always appreciated the small town feel of Durango. The thing is, I don't want to leave this place. The changing seasons, the tall mountains, the overall culture, I am in love with Durango. Ever since I was a kid I have considered the outdoors to be a part of who I am. When I was still in a small private christian school our playground was the outdoors. We were submersed with nature. Back then we even had a class on survival, which entailed using bow drills to start fires and even making our own atlatls, an old Native American spear like tool used for hunting. Every recess a bunch of the students would go out to hit targets. To this day I like to throw my atlatl at home.
Even though a big part of Durango is the outdoors I still find that I want to stay not only for that but because this is where I was raised. This is where my family is. When my family was living out in the country we were especially connected to our surroundings. Whether my dad would take my sister and I to go hunting or we were just enjoying the morning sun, we always were close to each other and still are. I am deeply rooted in my family and that has influenced me greatly to stay in Durango. That said, I have heard great things about Fort Lewis College and I am excited to go there. I have heard great things from my sister, too. She has gone there before and learned a lot. I am excited to be in Durango as an individual attending Fort Lewis College, being in the mountains, with my family, and where I call home, Durango.
